I need to share an amazing story that has just shaken my routine. All of you have heard over and over again about my show me the money promise to myself. Despite still being far away from that goal, I live fully and once in awhile make some ridiculous purchases. Just last week I spotted this incredible shearling coat that was a huge steal. Sadly, even as a steal it was just about the most expensive piece of clothing I have ever intended to buy. I couldn’t sleep that night. The next day I brought two of my girlfriends to the store just to confirm that the coat is worth starving myself for the rest of the summer for. After many hours of talking about it I decided to put it on hold and come to get it the next morning. It is an investment after all – I would have it for the rest of my life.
The next day I was so excited I almost ran to the store during my short break from work. There were two ladies at the register sealing their own deals when I arrived. One of them was a customer of mine at the restaurant. She is the most generous and beautiful person you could ever meet. We struck up a short conversation since I haven’t seen her for a while. I showed both ladies the coat, which I was about to buy, and proudly told them that it was my investment. Of course, they laughed, but admitted that the coat looked gorgeous on me and I should defiantly get it. After they left I still hesitated to take out my credit card, but slowly I did. The sales associate looked at me with a sincere smile and said, “Vilma, the coat is already paid for”. It probably took a minute for me to realize what had just happened. My customer had bought me the coat. The coat I will have for the rest of my life.
Of course, I had to have a glass of wine after that kind of day. I went home soon after it happened and opened a bottle of 1998 Franz Hirtzberger Steinporz Weissburgunder from Wachau, Austria. You are not misreading it, I did say a 1998 white wine from Austria, and it was beyond good. Weissburgunder is actually Pinot Blanc, which is not really a noble grape variety. Pinot Blanc is a mutant of the Pinot Noir grape and it is mostly grown in Alsace, Germany; Northern Italy and Austria. I couldn’t believe how lucky I got twice in one day! The wine had the most incredible long finish, honey notes and bright acidity, which is so unusual for a 12 year old white wine. It had body but was light at the same time, intense and complex. It was all I needed. I had to think and it made me think. I had to relax and it made me relax. It’s a good thing I bought 6 bottles of this wine and I had better drink them fast because who knows how long they will last tasting this good. Hirtzberger is one of my all time favorites. I already wrote about his Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, if I am not mistaken. But, hands down, tonight’s affair toped it all off.
As I was drinking my wine and staring at my beautiful new coat, I couldn’t stop thinking, Why did I go to the store exactly at 2pm? Her generosity has to be the reason. It is all about karma. I must get closer to my show me the money goal this year, or at least in 5 years, so I can buy somebody else a coat – I won’t be needing a new one for myself.
